SWB Hosted Auction Sets New Record

A few days ago SWB hosted the online portion of the Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction.

Sufline reports Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction sets highest total in history:

Corralling legendary surfers with even heavier historic artifacts often raises more than awareness. So when Randy Rarick’s annual Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction returned to Honolulu there were some serious heavy hitters stepping to the plate.

In fact, a new record totaling $767,546 was netted after some fierce but friendly bidding wars, with 1970s memorabilia being the hot ticket items.
Close to 400 auction goers rubbed elbows with the likes of Greg Noll, Bing Copeland, Jock Sutherland, Mark Richards, and Peter Townend in pursuit of a weighty line-up of goods. Items up for grabs included such prized surf memorabilia as an 8′0″ Gerry Lopez Lightning Bolt, George Greenough Flextail board from 1972, and a Kahanamoku family album — complete with original photos, and newspaper clippings. Money raised will go to help the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, the Surfing Heritage Foundation, and the Surfrider Foundation as well as the individual consigners.

There were two special items that drew the largest bids in the history of the auction. The 11′0″ Bob Simmons foam sandwich board (circa 1949/50) from the James Arness “Gunsmoke” collection topped the night at $40,000. The same bidder (hint: he’s Australian) also walked away with the second-highest-priced item: a 1955 Matt Kivlin 10′4″ balsa board for $39,000.

But, it wasn’t all about surfboards. 1977 world champion Shaun Tomson was baffled to discover his 1975 Duke Surf Classic set of white boardshorts, event program and Oscar-like gold trophy sold for $10,300 — more than his trademark blue 7′10″ Tom Parrish that went for $10,000. All proceeds from those items will be going to the Mathew Tomson Foundation.

And even though there was some cutthroat bidding wars, the spirit of aloha was alive and well at the Honolulu’s Blaisdell Center. This one-of-a-kind biennial event completed its fifth year and, judging by the turnout, looks to carry forth just as Hawaii’s surf legacy has.

And one more piece about the auction at surfermag.com:

The day after the Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, while surfing in Waikiki, I said a little prayer. It went like this:

Oh, great Kahuna, I have sinned. I have unabashedly coveted and my sin understood no limits. I coveted the thin. I coveted the thick. I coveted the long as well as the short. I coveted the old and the not-so-old. But, oh Great One, if it lends to more understanding of my transgression, let me say that I was not alone. So too did thousands of others covet alongside me—all of us lovers of the surfboard.

My prayer was interrupted by a little set wave and my thoughts turned. Close to 400 registered bidders descended on Honolulu’s Blaisdell Center for Randy Rarick’s fifth biennial Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection. The anticipation was palatable, the bidding contagious, and when the gavel dropped on the lectern for the final time, almost $770K had exchanged hands.

One of the many highlights was a fiscal tug-of-war between two keen bidders over a Greenough Flextail surfboard, which eventually netted $20K. Behind the roughshod aesthetic of this red and blue single-fin lay a wealth of hydrodynamic skunkworks-style brainpower. The bidding was quick and without delay, as these two collectors knew the value of a rare Greenough standup surfboard—this was not a kneeboard. Here’s hoping the buyer waxes it up for a go. That’s always one of the big questions on surfers’ minds. Will these boards ever be ridden again?

Stoked surfers were able to rub elbows with legends and luminaries as all involved admired the boards and shared stories. I spent a solid hour with the Bonzerrelli himself, Duncan Campbell, and soaked up gallons of insight about the Bonzer, along with anecdotal vagaries regarding surfboard design history.

As we chatted, Campbell pointed out a unique take on the transitional-period shortboards and the awkwardness that accompanied the first round of those designs. Campbell noted the beautifully crafted tails of the mid- to late-’60s era longboards on display. These are top-notch perfected noseridering machines, and, naturally, design-attention gravitates to the nose area. However, the tails of these boards are highly refined and don’t generally receive their due praise.

When surfboards started going smaller, many shapers cut off these tails, discarded them, and shaped the “new” shortboards from the middle point forward. What they ended up with were these rather paunchy, blocky, clunky tails. As Campbell noted, if they would have kept the gorgeously foiled tails and cut of the noses, the shortboard era would have made bigger steps sooner.

Next to us, four-time World Champ Mark Richards shared insight with a fan, shook hands, and graciously posed for photos. Other surfing luminaries on hand included Jock Sutherland, Ricky Grigg, Greg Noll, Rory Russell, and PT. Shaping icon Dick Brewer graced the auction floor and watched proudly as three of his exquisite boards fell under the gavel.

Earlier in the day, I spent an engaging breakfast with Bing Copeland and Matt Calvani. Next to us sat Matt Kivlin, Ben Aipa, Maui’s Bob “Ole” Olsen, Bob “The Greek” Bolen and the newest member of the shaping Hall of Fame (and historically underrated IMO) Mike Eaton. Rarick’s auction is surfing’s version of Cooperstown—but with waves. For fans of the surfboard and the historic men who make them, the auction is an unbelievable opportunity to meet, to share, and to buy.

One Australian bidder walked away with three surfboards paying out $100K. That should help make your next $700 surfboard purchase a little more digestible.

I ended my prayer, but not by asking for forgiveness. No. Instead, I ended my prayer by suggesting strongly that next time, perhaps, if it be the Great Kahunas will, I may possess a larger checkbook. Then, a humble amendment…”just possessing a checkbook” would be nice.

… A total of $80,000, or 14% was sold online via SWB’s auction software SAM.

Randy Rarick commented after the auction:

“SWB Consulting handled all our on-line auction needs and made the user experience exceptional for our on-line bidders. It made a huge difference in the results and I look forward to using their services again in the future”

Randy Rarick

SWB Goes to War…

… civil war, to be more precise :)

On August 15th 2009 Fontaine’s Auction Gallery will be holding a Big Civil War and militaria auction via SWB’s unique auction platform SAM:

Over 500 lots of important Civil War items, rare and vintage firearms and all manner of militaria will cross the block in an auction slated for Saturday, Aug. 15, by Fontaine’s Auction Gallery, beginning at 11 a.m. Featured will be the lifetime collection of the late George J. Bisacca, whose mainly Civil War collection was housed in the Eastover Resort complex in Lenox, Mass.

It is the first time Fontaine’s will have dedicated an entire auction to war memorabilia. Company president John Fontaine said the early buzz has been encouraging. “The initial reaction to the news within the collecting community has been tremendous,” he said. “Mr. Bisacca owned an astounding, museum-quality collection that will be selling to the highest bidder, without reserve. This is an opportunity for collectors that may never come along again.”

Included in Mr. Bisacca’s collection is a Colt M 1883 Gatling Gun, named after the man who invented it and a precursor to the modern-day machine gun. It had ten barrels and pumped out over 600 rounds per minute. The one being sold is fully operational and is in fantastic condition. There is also a second Gatling Gun in this auction.

The cannons in Mr. Bisacca’s collection are no less impressive. These include a British 1812 Naval mount cannon, a Coehorn mortar cannon, an 1861 Civil War ordinance rifled cannon with CSA markings, a Mann Smooth Bare prototype cannon, a Mann rifled prototype cannon, an 1892 Hotchkiss mountain rifled cannon, other cannons, and cannonballs.

Also from the Bisacca estate: hundreds of firearms (including dozens of rifles), cannon shells, drums, bullets and other projectiles, pistols, muskets, saddles, swords, bayonets, canteens, belts and buckles, period uniforms, spurs, daguerreotypes, powder horns, ramrods and more. Most items are from the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World Wars I and II.

The Bisacca collection comprises well over half of what will be offered. “His has been called one of the largest privately owned Civil War collections in the world,” Mr. Fontaine remarked. “It has been enjoyed by thousands of visitors to Eastover, from visiting schoolchildren to seasoned Civil War buffs. We will have people from every part of the country coming to this very important auction.”

Mr. Bisacca died in 1983. His collection has remained, virtually untouched and on display, at the Eastover Resort ever since. He was an Italian immigrant who came from humble beginnings, only making it through the ninth grade. But he developed a fierce passion for the Civil War and devoured countless books on the subject. He also went on excursions to hunt for relics from the era.

Eastover Resort, a longtime Lenox landmark and vacation destination, was originally built in 1910 by New York City stockbroker Harris Fahnestock, as a summer cottage for his family. The property comprised a main building (which he called “Eastover”), a stable (now called “Tally Ho”), a chauffeur’s home, an eight-car garage (now called “The Lodge”) and a pump house, all on 1,500 acres.

Upon Mr. Fahnestock’s passing, his heirs sold the Eastover estate at auction in 1941, and it became a boy’s school. But when that went bankrupt in 1944, Mr. Bisacca expressed an interest in acquiring the property (by then pared back to 500 acres). He made the purchase in 1946, for a mere $41,500. On Memorial Day weekend the following year, Eastover Resort officially opened for business.

Over the years, Eastover Resort has hosted high school proms, company gatherings, school field trips, holiday parties, weddings and family reunions. It has also served as the site of the Massachusetts Special Olympics Winter Games for more than 20 years. Sadly, all that will come to an end later this year, as the current owners – Mr. Bisacca’s daughter, Dorothy H. “Ticki” Winsor, and her daughter, Betsy Kelly – have made the painful decision to close the Eastover Resort’s doors for good, on Nov. 1. They cited increased operating costs, a slumping economy and local and state regulations as reasons for the closing. Eastover will be sold, on a date still to be set.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bisacca’s legacy – his prized collection – will be brought from its special room at Eastover to Fontaine’s Auction Gallery for the Aug. 15 sale. A packed house is expected. Online bidding will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com and Proxibid.com, and directly through the Fontaine’s website, www.fontainesauction.net. Phone and absentee bids will also be accepted. A color catalog may be ordered by calling Fontaine’s at (413) 448-8922. Previews will be held the week prior.

Fontaine’s Auction Gallery is always accepting quality consignments for future sales. The firm is actively seeking quality lots for its summer and fall auction series. Wanted are firearms, clocks, watches, barometers, antique lamps and lighting. To consign a single item, an estate or a collection, you may call them directly, at (413) 448-8922; or, you can e-mail them, at info@fontaineauction.com.

To learn more about Fontaine’s Auction Gallery and its calendar of upcoming events, please log on to www.fontainesauction.net.

Feel free to check in frequently to place preseale bids on items via SWB’s live and online auction software SAM.
