When Friendlyway Inc., the creators of the famous web
enabled Kiosk terminal, approached SWB, even their own
engineers had given up on the problem at hand:
In order to hotsync the Palm Pilot and other handheld's
and PDA's via the IR port on the Friendlyway Kiosk
terminal specific QuickBeam libraries, which can only be
used on NT4, had to be utilized. Use of these libraries
was activated when the Java applet, which beams data to
the handheld devices, was talking to the IR port. The
problem was that the same level of functionality had to be
achieved on a Windows 2000 system in order to successfully
hotsync the aforementioned devices.
While this could not be resolved SWB's engineers created a
workaround by writing a program that can send files to the
Palm using the OBEX stack. This application can easily be
called from the PHP scripts and is used to transparently
transfer the data to the handheld device. Furthermore it
will work on any current Win2K platform and most probably
on future Win XP etc. platforms as well, as the OBEX stack
is standardized. |
